We’ve been swamped. There’s no other way to put it. George’s off-farm job has been demanding to the degree that even on his so-called PTO days, he has had to work remotely, sometimes for a full workday, or even longer hours. This has caused a great deal of stress for our family and our farm. Things have fallen seriously behind.
Thanks to the generosity and kindness of a dear friend who drove from a state’s distance away a few weeks back, however, we tackled two large farm projects together. So those can be checked off the list, and the humans and animals alike have experienced relief and contentment as a result. Not only did we get practical tasks accomplished, but friendship’s bonds were strengthened, and she also provided us with encouragement and perspective that we both needed right then. I cannot begin to explain our gratitude, which continues to help keep me motivated to keep moving every day since.
I finally remembered to bring my phone outside to the new housing so I could do some show and tell here on the blog. So here we go! Please excuse my breathing in the videos. I am fighting some kind of lung funk (heading to the doctor’s office in a couple hours, in fact) so I sound like a creeper on the phone, but honest, it’s just my asthma plus whatever this infection is.
Here is the new Banty flock yard. We still need to stain their house, and I’m hoping to do that tomorrow. It’s going to be violet and lime green. Meantime, they are enjoying their new outside screened in porch. It’s all mobile, so once they wear this part of the yard down, we can move the entire structure.
Banty Chickens are miniature chickens, if you don’t already know about them. They are about 1/4 the size of standard chickens. They lay eggs that are about half the size. We have a total of ten, but not all of them came outside during this video.
We also put together a yard for the baby goats so they weren’t relying on us to take them on supervised walks. You can’t really see the figure-8 design, but it will allow us to separate the boys from the girls soon, but have everyone nearby. There will be a sort of “breeding alley” between both yards/houses for when that time comes. But for now, just enjoy some baby goat cuteness.
