Farm Kid

The weekends around here get so busy that I rarely have time to post (as you probably already noticed) and sometimes, things slip my mind. Such as, “Oh, hey, I took some photos on Friday that I meant to share on the blog!”

Our son really enjoys helping to take the goats on a walk. We have mowed a path along the borders of our property lines in the Northwest corner that takes them along the field and woodline, so they have plenty of browsing areas from which to eat. He also likes to feed them by hand, and they happily take the greens he offers:

(He also likes to tickle their tails with those long blades of grass, but the goats don’t like it when I talk about that.)

Kids who live on farms enjoy many health benefits: they are at lower risk for allergies, all the way up into their 70’s; there is more peace and quiet, and hence, less stress; and violent crime rates in rural areas tend to be much lower than in the city. Granted, how isolated the setting in which a farm is located can also have a downside of not being close to medical care and shopping, but we are really fortunate in that those things are only about 10-15 minutes away from us. We kind of have the best of both worlds here.

We hope to be able to involve our son in great activities like those offered in 4-H as he gets a little older. He’s already expressed an interest in raising his own bunny or piggy. We’ll see how he feels about it in a couple of years, since you have to be five as of January 1st in the year you’d like to join.

In the meantime, we are teaching him all that we can by involving him in our daily chores and instructing him about animals and growing our own food. He was already asking this weekend how old he needs to be in order to mow the lawn with “the real mower” and not his Fisher-Price toy. I hope his enthusiasm for the task doesn’t fade by the time he’s big enough for us to take him up on that! 😀

We are really happy to be able to have this farm life to share with him, and look forward to watching him grow and develop into a young man of excellent character.
