Heidi, Alpha Goat

Heidi is the alpha of our little herd, and has a wonderful personality, if you ask me. She’s very friendly, affectionate, and playful, yet capable of taking charge of the others when she deems it necessary. She’s always the first to greet me, and when we go for walks outside, she keeps a close eye on my whereabouts, occasionally coming over to rub her head on my knees and stand between my legs. That isn’t an easy thing to get a photo of myself, but I managed this yesterday:

This behavior reminds me of my brother’s dog Jane, who unfortunately passed a few months back. She was a German Shorthair Pointer, and was short for the breed, but wow, what a personality she had! One of her habits was to do this same thing – she liked to stand between legs. My brother said that when he went to the breeders to pick her up as a puppy, she was standing between her mother’s legs in the same fashion, so it may have been a comfort to her when she did the same with us. I’d like to think that’s the case with Heidi. Of course, being a Toggenburg/Alpine mix, she’s going to grow tall enough once she’s a full-grown adult that it’s not likely she’ll be able to do this forever. So I just keep cherishing these moments now.

My, how she’s grown since March!
