Saturday Roundup

Last night, just a little after 9:00 p.m., George looked out the window, and saw doom on the horizon. A pretty horrific storm blew through, and started right in the middle of our closing up the animals for the night chores. There were rumors of tornadoes in the township south of us; at the very least, their warning sirens were activated. The winds reached gusts of 70 mph. Our power went out at around 9:30, and didn’t return until about 3:00 this morning. I’m fighting off some kind of respiratory infection right now, and being asthmatic, I need to use my nebulizer machine about every 3-4 hours in order to avoid attacks (which, of course, requires electricity). Needless to say, I was unable to sleep until around 4:00 this morning, when I finally had gotten a treatment in and could breathe. A generator is definitely on our future wish list.

When the gusts really picked up, we were concerned about a tornado, and hurried back to the house. There were some juvenile chickens who just lolly-gagged around outside the coop and we had to resign ourselves to their being on their own. Fortunately, they hunkered down on the sides of the building and around midnight, once the storm had passed, we found them, and I ushered them inside. There is one in particular who is always the last chicken to go inside, and has already spent several nights outside due to her refusal to cooperate with the night-time routine we have.

The goats seem a little hoarse this morning, so we figure they must have screamed quite a bit during the storm last night, poor things. They were awfully glad to see us! So far, so good with the coccidia issue, from what we can see – everyone is pooping the normal little goat berries.

Our inflatable pool toys all took a ride on the winds last night, but George was able to locate them strewn in the woods. We’re going get some lattice to box in the little temporary deck we have built for the pool to provide us with an enclosed storage area for the pool stuff.

We picked up some more cracked corn for the chickens this morning at the feed store, and they’ll be happy for it. They love to scratch for it on the ground!

Have a great weekend all!

I wondered if you’d notice that. 🙂 Yeah, we realized we really need to get an APC going here in the office! We had one on our TV and a lamp – we had the TV on for about 20 mins (the satellite went out anyway) and saved the rest of the juice for the lamp.
