Is there an entomologist in the house?

A few days ago, while doing some skimming/bug removal from our pool, George fished this nasty-looking insect out of the water. Check out that stinger!

It just looks menacing, doesn’t it?

The next morning, he went out to check the chlorine level in the pool, and realized that the awful thing had stood up, and was getting ready to take flight. He grounded it, and one of our chickens delighted in devouring the thing.

Can anyone identify this insect? We are curious if we have a nest of them on the property of which we should be aware and more importantly, about which we should BEWARE.

I think this may be a Horntail Wasp. But I’m not certain.
