The Importance Of Weeding Earnest(ly)

Anyone who has a garden knows that daily weeding is a priority. I certainly understand that myself. In theory.

In reality, I also have chickens, goats, and other responsibilities, and really fertile soil in our vegetable garden. We’re talking, I’m concerned as to whether there is protomatter involved. Falling behind in weeding for even a week results in a near-unmanageable overgrowth. I’ve been trying to keep up, getting areas cleared out, and trying to maintain them before they are overtaken again. It’s hard work, and my lower back can attest to that!

The garden is quickly overtaken by pesky weeds
Pulling weeds gradually reveals our plants!
It’s impossible to spot all of the cukes when they are hidden by weeds – so important to keep them cleared out!

I found a couple of squash bugs on one of our plants while weeding this morning – and quickly transformed them into squish bugs. Looks like it’s time to go Jerry Baker on their butts. I’ll be mixing up some crazy concoction to spray on them soon!

So, moral of the story is – try to keep on top of your weeds, lest they get on top of your plants. I’m doing it in 15-20 minute stretches, which is about all my back can take. Using the hoe is just ineffective in these conditions, so I’m pulling everything by hand, which is quite a workout. Well worth the effort, mind you, but it’s taking time for me to get through it all. Fortunately, the plants are still surviving and thriving!

We are envisioning raised beds for next year. And perhaps a high tunnel!

And it’s raining like mad now, so I’m sure all of the work I’ve done weeding over the past several days will be quickly undone as the weeds take over again! LOL
