“Where have you been?”

Yes, I’ve been on hiatus from the blog for the past couple of days – but that’s because I’ve just been, well…frankly, too exhausted to compose anything! The past few days have been primarily spent getting the garden in shape. You see, while I did get all of those plants and seeds in the ground several weeks ago, I hadn’t been able to spend much time weeding. And with the sort of fertility our soil exhibits, let’s just say that it was overgrown to the point where I was on the lookout for Colonel Kurtz and his Montagnard army. It’s been an enormous task; I’ve overfilled two 55 gallon barrels full of weeds to be burned. Here is an in-progress photo. Unfortunately, my camera decided to break this morning, so I can’t show you the “after.” 🙁

We use old carpet to define walking areas and control weeds in between rows.

If there’s one thing we’ve been lamenting, it’s that we were not able to do raised beds this year. We are focusing on that as a 2011 goal – and hopefully, our wish-list high tunnel, too!

Today, we planted some more bean, squash, and pea seeds. Hopefully the squash will have enough time to get going before its too late in the season – the beans and peas are not usually an issue, as I plant those throughout the growing season.

You may have to put up with some phone photos from me in the near future, as the Canon Powershot is throwing errors instead of snapping photos, and has grinding gears in the lens, so it sounds like a death knell from here. But in the meantime, here are some of the last images the camera managed:

Well, I’m back to my to-do list for the day – I still have some housecleaning, porch planters, and animal chores to tend to – have a great holiday weekend everyone!
