Worming Their Way Through The Day

The chickens got to try some canned mealworms for the first time today. They were a hit, as you can see.

It was not unlike watching the crowd at bargain buffet in a Vegas casino. Tittering hens, all vying for the best bits of food.

The can said that we were to refrigerate any unused portion. But I’m sure you can infer from the photo above, there was no unused portion. Besides, I am not putting those critters in my fridge with our food. *shudder*

This was a small tin from the pet store, and was actually being sold as a reptile treat. It was rather pricey, about $5 for just over an ounce. I’ll be procuring them from another source in the future – I see that many wild bird food sellers carry them for a more reasonable price, and I suppose if we really wanted to get DIY, we could order one of the many kits out there to grow your own. *shudder* I don’t know if I’m up for that, though.

A terrific storm just came through over the past hour, and despite having ready access to the coop, three hens decided to tough it through outside. I think they wanted to get first dibs on the earthworms that come to the surface after a good rainfall. Sure enough, everyone is out scavenging now that the storm has passed!
