Buddy Hen and her chips

I think I’ve mentioned before that Buddy Hen likes to come up on the front porch and ask for chips. She is very good about taking them from me — and thinks they are so tasty, she’ll even stick her head in the bag (or try to eat from the bowl of chips pictured on the front of the bag!) to get more.

Here’s Buddy Hen in the yard

Since she’s so motivated by chips, I thought I’d try to teach her some tricks. The first is very simple — jumping for the chip.

I’m sure there are some other things I can teach her to do, too. I remember when I was very young and we drove down to Florida for the first time (1974? Mom, can you help me out here?) we stopped at a department store that had a big bank of cages with different animals — chickens, ducks, and even a monkey, I seem to recall — that you’d put in a coin, which would signal the animal to do a little trick, and they’d receive a treat in exchange. Now, I won’t be putting Buddy in a cage like that, but who knows, maybe there are other tricks she can do.

We did pick up our new rooster at the county fairgrounds yesterday, and I’ll be introducing you to him in another post later today. Check back later to meet Sam!
