Wild Turkeys Pay A Visit

It’s been raining since last night – a constant fluctuation between downpour and drizzle, just enough to make a person feel miserable, especially when combined with the bone-penetrating chill that is accompanying it. Since chores and breakfast this morning, I’ve been curled up in a blanket on the couch, nursing my aches, pains, and what seems to be a head cold.

However, this weather seems to really agree with some of the feathered population. Namely, our ducks, and this flock of at least fourteen wild turkeys who were just lounging and foraging in our side and front yard. I was startled at first when I looked out at them, but they were surprisingly unperturbed by me and my camera, even when I stepped out onto the front porch. I do wish I had a telephoto lens at times such as this, to show you just how beautiful these animals are. One day!

In the meantime, here they are. Click on any photo to see an enlarged version (recommended).

When we moved here in September of 2008, we saw a large flock of around 25 birds on our property, the first Sunday that we were residents. I was so excited about their presence, but was disappointed when I didn’t see them again for a long time. In fact, it was March of 2010 before they visited again, and even at that time, there were only a couple of them. We certainly heard their calls in the woods from time to time, but they would never show themselves. It is understandable, when you consider the multitude of predators interested in them, and it does seem that their numbers may be down. But they obviously felt safe to be out today, and I’m really glad that they chose to visit our house while they are out and about. Sometimes it’s the little events like this that can make up for an otherwise dreary day!
