We were surprised with the delivery of a little doeling on Tuesday morning, who was premature and weighed in at only 1.5 pounds! Her mother is a first freshener and was quite bewildered with the entire birthing process, and was having difficulty understanding what her maternal role encompasses. I waited as patiently as I could, but after two hours of her mom being rather inattentive, not feeding her, and the poor baby wailing, I snatched her up and brought her to the house. She received her mother’s colostrum in a bottle and took right to latching on, which is a relief, because that is not always a given with goat kids and bottles.
This little girl is doing great – she’s wearing a sweater right now because she has nothing to speak of in terms of body fat to insulate her. We have an old Pack -n- Play that we use as her “home base” but she loves to come out and run across the kitchen floor to come and get me, and often wiggles through my legs to do Figure-Eights around my feet and ankles. She’s quite the affectionate goat kid, and playful, too! She’s gained 50% of her birth body weight, and at the rate she’s eating, she should be filling out in no time. 
We’d thought we’d do something different and crowdsource her name – that’s right, we are giving you a say in the naming process this time! We’ve come up with five possible names – all geeky pop culture references – and you get to pick the one you like best. This is a limited time poll – it ends at noon on Saturday. So be sure to get your vote in! We’re excited to know what her name will be. Voting is done below – one vote per person, please. 🙂

Selena – as in, Selena Kyle – also known as Catwoman.
Willow (Rosenberg) – from Buffy The Vampire Slayer.
Uhura – the communications officer aboard the USS Enterprise.
Gabrielle (Gabby) – from Xena, Warrior Princess.

4/7/2012 7:55 PM: RESULTS ARE IN! It was a neck and neck tie between Pris and Willow, so George cast the deciding vote: Willow it is! Thanks to everyone who voted, and sorry that I was so late in posting this. I’ve been fighting a massive migraine all day long. Happy Easter to all!
Be sure to also check out George’s post regarding our new offering this year – pastured chicken! We will be starting to take deposits on these birds today, and they will be processed on May 31st and another batch on June 23rd. We have not yet scheduled further batches for the year, but we do plan to offer more in July, August, September, and possibly October, if the weather holds out.
