The New Pig Pen

No, we’re not talking about a relaunch of a Peanuts character. Although, in these times where some movie makers can’t seem to formulate an original idea, it doesn’t seem that unlikely, does it? Anyway. I’m digressing again.

IMAG0929We finally got our pig’s pen built last weekend, and I have meant to post up about it since last week, really. It’s just been a tough week for writing. I haven’t felt that great, and that definitely is a creative flow restriction. But I’m doing my best to just work through it, so here I am!

We used a combination of cattle and hog panels that we had on hand, in conjunction with some wood posts and T-posts that were also “in stock” in our barn to build out a yard for them. We just surrounded the house that they were already in. George then installed a hot wire about 6″ off the ground to discourage digging underneath. So far, we haven’t had any climbing attempts, but we are aware that pigs sometimes try that, so we have caps on the tops of the T-posts ready to accept another hot wire. We’re using a solar-powered charger for the electric fencing and it is working very effectively. It’s nice to have that “off-grid” -a small start toward something we want to eventually do across our property.IMAG0926

As you can see, the pigs have torn down the tarp on their hut. We are waiting for their new house to arrive – a small animal hut from FarmTek – that should be more suited to the rough and tumble world of hog housing.

The pigs have been thrilled with their new yard – they love having space to roam, and they especially love their mud hole!
