Record Temperatures

The thermometer outside is reading 81 degrees F, and it is a beautiful day. There’s just enough of a breeze that it’s not an unpleasant heat, and our house remains cool without the need for air conditioning, right up until the point we cross the 85 degrees and humidity mark, which shouldn’t be an issue for several weeks.

I’ve gone on a couple of walks with Heidi, Gidget, and Loki today, and it’s been pretty blissful and entertaining. (Goats have a special talent for providing amusing antics.) Speaking of Loki, have I ever introduced him? He’s our Boston Terrier, and is just an awesome little companion, to us, and our other animals. He is zealous in his pursuit of a laser pointer, likes to cuddle under the blankets with me when I nap, and just has a sweet, agreeable personality that I adore. He’s quite the little dog.

He loves going on walks with the goats around our property, and if it’s raining and I’m going out to feed them, he is disappointed in knowing that the walk isn’t going to happen. But thankfully, there’s been plenty of opportunity to enjoy the sunshine today!

Last night, I prepped a plethora of seed trays for starting the remainder of my seeds – finally! Now I just need to complete the task by getting the seeds planted. I’m using recycled clear deli containers, along with some of the regular seed starting trays I’ve saved from last year, so it’s quite the sight. “Hobo style,” as my husband calls it. 🙂 But it saves money, and allows me to re-purpose those containers, rather than adding them to a landfill. So getting those planted and on their way is on my agenda over the next couple of days.

I’m also hoping that we can get the garden rototilling done this weekend – we weren’t able to complete it last weekend, due to the tiller breakdown and subsequent rain. I have seeds that need to go in while it’s still relatively cool out, like peas, carrots, etc. And, my All Blue and German Butterball potatoes arrived today, and need to be planted ASAP! These crops all like cooler weather and need it to develop properly. I want to be able to put up some carrots and potatoes beyond the fresh eating we enjoy from them, if at all possible. The peas, I’ve pretty much accepted that those won’t yield enough for freezing or canning. We have trouble resisting eating them straight out of the pod while working in the garden, let’s be honest.

We need to schedule opening our pool, too. It’s going to be June before we know it, and if today is any indication, we might actually have a summer this year, so it will be nice to take a refreshing dip in the hot weather, particularly after hard days of work with the garden and our animals.

I reinforced the fence ties on the goats yard earlier this afternoon, and so once we get some plastic snow fencing to be able to create an aisle in the barn going from their pen to the door outside, I’ll feel more comfortable giving the girls free access to go in and out as they please.

It’s already time to start dinner, so that’s all for now! What are you planting this year? Please share in the comments!
