Our Roosters

I thought I’d take the opportunity to introduce you to all of our roosters. You’ve already met our oldest roo, the Welsummer. He’s a gorgeous boy, and he’s fulfilling his duties very well – alerting and guarding the flock, providing fertile eggs (and he’s quite gentle with the hens while doing that, thankfully!) as well as having a great temperament around us. He has never been aggressive toward any of us, including Loki, our Boston Terrier. He has a bit of a limp, but gets along just fine, despite it. We think it’s a defect in his right leg; he doesn’t seem to have injured it, it just has grown improperly. He’s a great rooster, though, and we are happy to have him around.

Here are our younger roosters:

This fellow in the center was part of a batch of chicks we bought at TSC that were supposed to be Silver Laced Wyandotte pullets. Well, surprise! There was a rooster in the mix. We think there may be another surprise! in that we suspect that these are actually Barred Rocks, not Wyandottes.

The dark brown gent all the way in the back of this photo came with a bunch of ISA Browns, which were also supposed to be pullets (females) – but another surprise! You can see that he’s significantly different in coloring from the ISA hen in the middle. He was very camera shy, and kept turning his head, otherwise, you’d see his comb and wattles are also larger than the hen’s.

We have two Picard (Silver Duckwing Bantam) roosters. Of course, that leaves me wondering if we’re going to find the shuttlecraft El-Baz parked somewhere nearby, but I digress. You can see the distinct difference between hen and rooster in the first photo.

Finally, we have what we believe is a Belgian D’uccle Mille Fleur Bantam rooster. We also have two feather-footed hens of the same breed. There is no doubt about this one being a roo, either, because he’s already started crowing. Again, this one is not very keen on the camera.

So those are our boys – we’re hoping that the younger roos are going to follow the Welsummer’s lead in their behavior, and that we don’t have issues with aggression amongst them. We’re in touch with the fact that we may not be so lucky, but are hoping for the best!
