Driveway Woe and Wishin’ For A Backhoe

We had a great weekend for the most part – celebrating George’s birthday and relaxing some. We were dismayed to discover that our driveway collapsed in at the entry from the road, however! It seems that all of the work on the utility lines on our road did leave us with a bit of a problem – a pile of dirt that was left after they installed new poles washed away into our drainage gutter and has caused a blockage. This translates into all of the water coming down our driveway and eroding it. We’re still trying to figure out how best to deal with the problem, as there is only so much that hand digging can remedy. We really, really need a tractor. Maintaining this driveway is but one of the plethora of reasons!

Our driveway is almost 700 feet long.

Of course, in the meantime, we aren’t against using child labor. Ha!

I think I may have settled on a name for our new goat – I’m thinking she may be Veronica. Still not entirely sure.

Veronica?

We’ve rethought our plans for the goat pasture in terms of placement, and may have it come off of the back of the barn, and then wrap around to the North, rather than to the South. The girls seem to agree with this idea, as they love munching on the growth on the North side of the barn. Lovie gives the idea her look of approval:

Lovie has a Kawaii Smile going on here.

We’re also thinking that this is the last year we will be able to use our existing garden area for our vegetable garden. It is simply impractical to keep it free of weeds. That soil is so fertile, everything grows like mad. Which is lovely for all of the vegetables, but no matter what I do to try and control the weeds, they break on through. So we want to move to raised beds next year. We are considering our options, and since I want to get ducks, we are weighing whether it makes sense to make the existing garden area into a duck preserve. It has an 8′ fence around it, and we have plenty of space in there to add a small pond, housing, and still have scads of space for them to forage. We’ll see what happens. In the meantime, I’m just trying to keep ahead of the weeds! I have a ton of cukes to process for pickling. Unfortunately, some got lost in the weed jungle and have already turned yellow, but the chickens are not complaining about that – my loss of pickling cukes is their gain, and they are enjoying it!

I’m busy working on setting up some websites through my consulting business this week, so my posts may be sparse over the next few days – but fret not, I’ll keep taking photos and bring you up to date as quickly as I can. 🙂
