Hydroponic Herb Garden

George has been using a hydroponics kit from Stealth Hydro to grow herbs (no, not that kind of herb, although there are legitimate medical growers here in our state!) in our basement. Last week, I made delicious pesto with a bunch of the basil, and I had nearly stripped the plants bare. I just went into the basement and found that the plants are rebounding nicely. It’s good to know that we will have a supply of delicious, savory basil, even if the basil blight problem arrives in Michigan and decimates my outdoor plants.

Looks good enough to eat right on the spot!

We are growing basil, sage, and thyme in the unit right now, but we’re going to switch over to all basil soon, particularly given the likelihood that we will see some blight issues here – it’s already in Ohio.

Sage and thyme are also favorites of mine for cooking, make no mistake. But those can still grow outdoors without trouble, so I won’t take up precious space in our indoor setup for them in the future. Plus, the basil does exceptionally well using this method.

I’d definitely recommend hydroponics over the Chia Herb Garden. Unless, of course, you really have a burning desire to let Homer Simpson finally grow some hair. He’s certainly had enough bad luck; let him live vicariously through chives.
