Mystery Chick

We received a free “Fancy/Exotic” chick with our order of Black Australorps from Murray McMurray Hatchery earlier this month. When they first arrived, it was difficult to distinguish them from one another color-wise, but now that they are getting some feathers in, this one is definitely different!

What breed is our mystery chick?

McMurray kindly posted it up on their Facebook page and asked fans of the page to help identify it, which they have kindly attempted to do. Many asked for a better look at her legs, which I attempted to provide in this photo.

They hate holding still for the press!

My initial instinct is “Barred Rock.” And I suppose, perhaps, that breed could be regarded by some as Fancy or Exotic. But, in my book, however beautiful they are, they are fairly common. Several other folks held the same sentiment. Some suggested Cuckoo Maran (I’d be over the moon if that is the case!) or a Dominique (which would be pretty cool, too.)

I’m trying to provide as many close up shots as possible to help identify it.

You can click on any of these photos to enlarge them, by the by. 🙂

It’s a pretty bird, whatever it is!

So, anyone want to gander a guess as to what breed it might be? Please feel free to share your ideas in the comments section! Thanks so much.

I’m kind of leaning toward a Dominique cockerel, as I look up breed information and photos. Hmm…
