Defrosting Chickens

Some of the snow has finally started to melt, and does this ever make for some happy chickens. They have been thrilled to spend some time outside scratching at the patches of grass that are gradually peeking through – a nice glimpse of Spring on its way.

Today was especially delightful for them, as I brought out some treats, including some oatmeal (I was not a member of the Clean Bowl Club this morning), pumpkin, bread, and other goodies.

I keep that plastic bowl up on our countertop (my mom is so good about saving plastic containers, as she knows I’ll reuse them – thanks mom! :D) and any organic scraps that are suitable for chickens goes into it. After I distribute the contents out on the ground, they savor the opportunity to peck the bowl clean.

Sam, being the large rooster that he is, seems especially pleased with not being cooped up.

I just love this photo of Billy Badass – peeking through the hen booties!

We can’t wait for Spring. All of us!
