Feelin’ Saucy

I must apologize for how long it takes me to update here on the blog. Frankly, there are days when I just don’t feel like I have something productive to tell you. For instance, today has been almost a complete wash so far, aside from accomplishing the morning chores for the animals. My legs have been shaky and weak, and my carpal tunnel has had my right hand going numb; these things, on top of being exhausted have meant I haven’t been able to tackle my to-do list today. But everyone has their own health challenges, do they not? And mine are not as bad as some folks. I mention what’s going on not to throw myself a pity party, but to perhaps help explain my long absences from the blog.

Onward! Yesterday I did accomplish something above and beyond, and that was transforming lots of tomatoes into what I hope is a lovely seasoned sauce, which produced 9 quarts. It will be nice to open them up this winter, when everything is frozen and nothing is growing, and get a little glimpse of summer in a jar.

The recipe is from the Ball Blue Book, and I’ve posted the recipe (with my notes and modification) in the Farm Cookbook.

I still have many tomatoes to can, which I will do a simple tomatoes-in-water preparation for. The sauce took a long time to complete, and I just don’t have it in me to repeat yesterday’s task. I also have pears from the orchard to put up – some will be transformed into preserves, and the others, into Brandied Pears (just the Ball Blue Book recipe). I’ll look forward to having those over the winter, too. It will be nice to know where my pears came from, and the family who grew them, versus the “internationally anonymous” fruit you get in tins at the store.

Well, this is about as many keystrokes as I can manage at the moment. I hope all of the U.S. readers had an enjoyable holiday weekend (and everyone else had a nice weekend, too!). See you back here soon!
